From the buzz itself of the making there were hopes from the film Cirkus. Rohit Shetty is one of those directors who can pull out stunts well, along with a good amalgamation of film elements giving Bollywood a good masala film to reckon with. Cirkus had good scope of stunts unfortunately there are none. Ranveer Singh can do it all; given a double role, we awaited the magic to unveil. Knowing this, the vision of the film was set at par, the film hit below the belt seeing the trailer so underwhelming and now the film.

The slap stick comedy has more tight slaps than the comedy. Film has a wafer-thin story line that message is the key to the plot and the message holds good. But the film rides too slim on this and topples with the overdose of not so organic comedy. Everything is on the face, from Varun Sharma to Johnny Lever the film has an ensemble comic cast coming from the universe of Rohit Shetty films. Rohit Shetty here tries to be a Salman Khan putting food on everyone’s plate forgetting the larger picture to entertain audience than marking everyone present in his class. Ranveer Singh has shined through his performances playing larger than life roles, seeing him doing a mediocre role in the recent films is disappointing. And he has given his 100% even in those roles, but nothing is bigger than the script or say content. That is where Bollywood is suffering. The caliber of artist Ranveer Singh is, attracts a better pairing of the cast opposite him. Pairing him with Jacqueline and Pooja Hegde is a low blow.

Where women in the industry are talking about pay parity, men in the industry should give a discount to their price to be paired against the right opposite cast giving makers that cushion of affording better actresses. Imagine the trailer of Cirkus breathed well when Deepika arrived on screen, their off-screen/on-screen pairing has been great, this circus probably could have been much better with better actresses than heroines who do more fill in the blanks than match the heroes of the film. The song current laga when Deepika arrives creates a great theatrical experience though pops in randomly making you wonder which Roy is shaking the leg nevertheless it is one of the best times you can have on screen in circus. One alone Ranveer Singh is enough to bring the house down, here even two struggle to make you go ROFL giving the content in hand. But give him the right content and you know he can create history.

Making comedy films can sometimes fall this flat, too many cooks spoil the food, is the best phrase that defines Cirkus. Place for everyone but no one really lands well to make you laugh. Amongst all, Sanjay Mishra is the best bet who brings the house down on the several occasions. The film brings in a retro feel considering the era it is set in, second half is almost like a chitrahaar you almost enjoy each song but not the act. I doubt if the film has any original track in the second half. Comic writing at times falls to a level that is gross and may embarrass a few other than that Cirkus is too clean to have any comedy too. One of the weakest films coming from Rohit Shetty in the recent times. We only hope he brings the magic back with his next Singham returns.
