Laapata Ladies – Finds the soul!!!

A Brilliant Cinema coming from the house of Aamir Khan Productions. Director Kiran Rao aces to perfection in her craft with Laapata Ladies. A honest attempt to bring the best from the stories layered with Indian Soil. Pitch Perfect cast, their performances and above all the look and feel of the film that holds your smile for longer than you may expect. The two ladies succeed to stir your soul along with so many in the film, becoming one of the best folklore genre films coming from rustic India. Kiran Rao should indeed make more films.

Set in 2001, where mobile phones were still a thing, sharing a pinned location is luxury to us, where finding a phone is easy but back then finding a lost one was tough. Laapata Ladies is one such soul-searching film, that speaks not just about losing a person literally, it speaks about the loss of freedom, freedom of education and the glory of dowry that comes with physical abuse at times.  All the weight is handled with subtle humor that is not just captured in words but in their execution too. There is a Penguin dustbin that says “Use-Me”, and it is put in the best use in the film. The film is a detailed work of art, that is rich in culture and its execution. The film dives you into it from frame one with their brilliant opening credits, simple yet powerful to absorb you into their world, our world of cinema.

Writing is the king here and the film has two brilliant queens; Pratibha Ranta and Nitanshi Goel; the laapata ladies who find their souls. The helplessness portrayed by Sparsh Shrivastava, longing to connect with his lost wife is palpable enough to make you feel for the irony he goes through. Ravi Kishan is at his best and we wonder why we don’t see him often; glad Amir Khan didn’t play his role. Ravi is in the skin of the character of the role of the inspector he plays,  and you only love to hate him. The role is well written and leaves a lasting impression. Besides, the role of grandma essayed by Chhaya Kadam, comes as a great supporting role, bringing a great camaraderie between her and Phool, the lost wife. She brings a dark Bollywood humor at its best, if you get it, you will relate and laugh out loud. But it never appears as a jibe, magical writing indeed.

The film looks beautiful, cinematography is a poetry here, and the poetry is melodious. Film has great music too well-integrated taking the narrative ahead. Laapata Ladies never has a dull moment, even in their darkest scenes the film sparkles. The film never plays a feminist card, speaking about the problems women face back then or even now w.r.t their freedom of choices or even a simple meal. The film has plethora of moments if watched consciously can bring a movement of change than just a few laughs experiencing cinema. Thus, Laapata Ladies finds the soul, in his writing, performances giving us a cinema that is not less than a Masterpiece.
