PK Verdict

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan lacks Ayushman Khurrana and over does almost everything. Though the ensemble cast delivers their one liners with a punch, yet the core subject lacks a certain sense of responsibility and loses itself in too much emphasized comic writing .It is an opportunity loss, but it has definitely opened up the choked bottleneck on the subject in an attempt to bring it a certain normalcy.

Hitesh Kewalya, the director has focused on all the external factors to make the film more acceptable to normalize same sex relations, turning out the core plot to a wafer thin missing out the opportunity to give an impact and what comes is just a mediocre comedy that is overcrowded with side characters, with side plots making a film look too congested.

Jitendra Kumar and Ayushmann Khurrana strike the chord with each other and with the audience from scene one without making one feel awkward normalizing the subject and bringing the SBZS’s vision on the table. The acceptance amongst themselves is already there and are not out yet to their parents. The plot doesn’t give much clue on Ayushmann’s family. But Jitendra Kumar’s family, it overdoes. His Khandaan Tripathi’s they are so entangled that it overtakes the subject itself.

Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao extend their warmth from Badhaai Ho, they spark the screen right. Gajraj Rao steals the show with his sheer facial expressions as a denial father. It is the subplot of their stories that unlayers the film to a climax that doesn’t look so convincing. Apart from this couple, there is a track of Maanvi Ghagroo, track of Kusum, track of Black cauliflowers, track of Tripathi brothers that overtakes the core story.

Ayushmann Khurrana though performs has less screen presence than his partner Jitendra Kumar. Post interval there is a long wait to see Ayushmann re-enter. Jitendra Kumar though easy on screen lacks the required weightage for the character to hold for long and hence too many sidekicks. Hitesh loses the sight of the core plot with these sidekicks and film fails to give you anything to take home.

Bollywood is designed in a way where you need to have a Hero & a Heroine, and everything leads towards their interest. This film has a Hero paired with another Hero to normalize same sexual relationships. As per the design, everything could have led towards their interest, director here lets you explore failing to penetrate the interest on the core. The film though succeeds to entertain yet never gets into the desired direction and loses its core in Zyada.

Sidetracks are weighed too much and Kartik & Aman’s story comes feather lite not giving much scope for the subject to grow or create any impact making Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan an opportunity loss. Attempt though honest misses the right beat.
