Anand Rai wins our hearts this time along with Akshay Kumar with his Raksha Bandhan.

The film though not flawless yet succeeds to entertain in its colorful spirit of India with its core in the Capital of the Capital City Chandni Chowk.

Right from frame one without wasting a minute, Director takes you in the plot of the film that has crisp run time and lot on platter making an impressive first half. Drama unfolds well and we see what’s coming. This is where the strength of the director reflects and we are glad he gets it almost right this time than his recent films.

Akshay Kumar plays Kedarnath the name itself is an epitome of belief and christening him to the right name, the screenplay depicts our belief in Kedarnath showcasing the phrase “pran jaaye par vachan na jaaye” literally. His oath to the passing mother is where the crux of story lies that doesn’t let his love life reach the goal of marriage. Bhumi Pednekar succeeds to mark her presence strong in this crowded world of Raksha Bandhan, thanks to the great writing. Writers Kanika Dhillon and Himanshu Sharma gets it quite right. The conflict and reasoning behind the Dowry that comes almost as a street play in two parts, one led by the social worker lady in a debate with Kedarnath, and second comes from the Man himself when he is heartbroken witnessing the impacts of Dowry.

Sadia and Seema Pahwa have strong screen presence and succeed to deliver rest is the crowd. Sahil Mehta stands out as right hand of Kedarnath and adds a lot to the journey of Kedarnath.

Makers succeed to make one ponder on the subject of Dowry; multiplex audience may have less appetite for this subject but a larger part of India still sees Dowry as a dark existence of the system that nobody talks off. Kudos to the director and Akshay Kumar for making a film  on the subject. Considering the kind of films we see, Raksha Bandhan is the road less travelled. We only wished it was not rushed and had more than the surface level of entertainment or had more soul to it. Nevertheless, Raksha Bandhan is true to its genre of the film it is.

A flavor of the season you must relish in the cinemas near you.
