#Malang – Mast Madness!!!

No Spoilers Ahead.

Mohit Suri gives us a film with the right tagline “unleash the madness”. It echoes his vision of the film Malang; it takes this craziness to offer something so well packaged. It has all the ingredients that will tantalize your interest, but the good thing is they are all put together well – that’s cooking. Aseem Arora’s receipt is well – made. It takes the madness of the  screenplay writer Aniruddha Guha’s craft to develop this depth from a wafer-thin plot. Director Mohit Suri derives a great madness out of all this and serves us a film that is salty, sour, sweet, tangy and spicy too.

The film starts too slow for you to develop any interest as it gets busy developing their characters. It is only after 30 minutes or so, you get what is happening. From here till the interval you sail through and somewhere you know what is being cooked. It is post interval that you keep guessing the taste of Malang. The nuances of all the four characters is brilliant. Anil Kapoor steals the show and carries the great burden of acting giving you all his graphs in one film. Aditya Roy Kapur seems has graduated from Alcohol to drugs organically looking at the film set in Goa that is all about rave parties and wild hook-ups. Disha Patani who lives only to experience life from one high to another gets hook on this high of love with Aditya and their chemistry sizzles with the great cinematography and brand integration of GoPro along with some hummable songs setting the mood right.  In the much to & fro between present & past date they bring some great moments alive with their growing likeability you start liking the duo that helps connect the plot. Kunal Khemu is the taste that elevates the overall recipe not letting you feel what did you just taste – sweet, sour, tangy, spicy and succeeds to give you the much-needed flavor. He is indeed a great actor who lives his role with sheer madness and gets easily layered with anything you give him. Disha Patani does what she is expected too, looks fab and sails through with the ace performers. It is Elli AvrRam as Jessie who really surprises with her performance, she has acted so well comes and comes quite apt as a drug peddler.

The story of the film though wafer thin, it is well executed, and second half connects all the dots well keeping the interest high in the film. Execution touches all the right chords be it action, emotion, thrill or sheer madness. It takes the climax scene on the bridge when the Anil Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur ring in the ‘Happy Solstice”.

Mohit Suri’s film has its own genre of music that stays with you for long and carry good depth. Malang though has few good soundtracks; none of them are great enough to stay with you for long though they really go well in the film yet out of the film nothing resonates.  “Chal Ghar Chalen” is beautiful and gives you a déjà vu of Mohit Suri’s earlier similar track from the film “woh lamhe”. Title track roars keeping the high of the film high.

Malang is a stylish thriller that syncs you in its mad rush, making you feel mast in its madness.
