Ek Thi Begum – Bombay’s Gang Bang!!!

Ek Thi Begum is an intriguing story of old Bombay’s  gang bang and it grows slowly on you. Once you are in it, you stay there and enjoy the era. The makers succeed to give you the essence of what Bombay was, be it the local goons of Bombay pup-petted by one and only one Dubai Bhai or be it the Thumka’s in the Dance Bars which was a hub to many gangster to prosper or be it the local cops abusing left right and center in Marathi language. The series has the local language in the blood giving soul to the characters they play.

Ek thi Begum is a underworld saga of Bombay inspired by true events. It has the power of two Sachin’s; Sachin Darekar the director and Sachin Gadankush who is the director of Photography. The duo together being the era live of how Mumbai was in Mid- 1980’s.

It is the content, storytelling, writing and performances that all put together shine to bring the magic of this revenge drama. The Begum Ashraf loses her husband in one of the conflicts trying to seek justice but could not go much far unless she takes the charge. Her journey of transformation is spell-bound, and she keeps you hooked to the further developments keeping the interest high.

The series is 14 episode long at an average run of 35minutes per episode which appears as a little long than one would expect. Nevertheless, it is worth a watch.

Anuja Sathe as Ashraf Begum performs stellar in the titular role. It is Abhijeet Chavan who shines as a ferocious cop Tawade you would love to hate. Rajendra Shisatkar as Nana is equally good too. Ankit Mohan has a key role to play in initial few episodes, he plays the King of the Begum and is an easy bait to the series to evolve. Chinmay Mandlekar plays Vikram Bhosle, a junior inspector who shines out bright is also a show stealer with his subtle performance. All and all the series consist of a brilliant ensemble cast that delivers.

The only minus here I feel is the length of the series and a song here & there. This could be easily ignored to witness the beauty of Bombay of 80’s. Last episode leaves you craving of what happens next. For that, one would have to wait for Season 2. For now, enjoy Bombay’s gang bang on MX Player.

Ek Thi Begum – A good watch.
