#Chhapaak – Over Poured & Bored!!!

Meghna Gulzar ‘s chhapaak is socially conscious but lacks the consciousness of the medium that is created to engage and enthrall you in the made believe world to entertain. All that matters are stories that matter; Chhapaak may have had a great story on paper, the journey from paper to celluloid is where chhapaak gets over poured and bored.

Deepika Padukone plays Malti, an extraordinary journey of an ordinary girl and her triumph based on real life story of Laxmi Agarwal. The real-life story is indeed a great journey of achievements, choosing what is right for you, right for society, right to fight and not just survive. Raising the bar of survival to the people who are doomed in their depression making death an easy way to escape. Malti says that, but when it comes on screen, the timing doesn’t seem to be right.

Meghna Gulzar picks up the right story with the right intention and the right artist Deepika but the film fails to stir the soul or comes as expected. With no linear flow, chhapaak is weak in execution as well. On top of that it doesn’t have any other actor that shines on screen other than Vikrant Massey who hardly has any depth in his role. No other supporting cast stands out or adds much value to the watch. Chhapaak title song is splashed time and again making the narrative slow and makes the short run time feel longer.

The film is about the victory how one girl dares to challenge and change the law. The law of course gets change, on paper, what doesn’t change is the number of acid attacks. The end credits only showcase the grown numbers and makes the win look small. The film that could have been a moment and first in its kind, unfortunately will not find many takers as the celluloid triumph is too dull to engage. The horrifying screams too are repetitive, and they leave you haunting.  The same screams appear at the very end to remind you that you are watching a scary film.

A film that was supposed to be beautiful, beautiful inside beautiful outside, that doesn’t really happen. It leaves you over poured and bored.
