 Sector 36 –  Gruesomely Brilliant!!!

Debutant Aditya Nimbalkar’s Sector 36 a crime thriller on Netflix, brings a dark and gritty narrative that shines through the strong performances sending you shivers down the spine. Vikrant Massey shines in the skin of the character playing gruesomely brilliant as Prem. Deepak Dobriyal too excels in his role as a headstrong character, delivering a truly memorable performance. Along with the story line, it is indeed the performances that make Sector 36 a must watch film.

Prem essayed by Vikrant Massey delivers a complex performance at ease. It is unbelievable to what we see him do on screen. It’s a pure magic. He comes as a serial killer, abductor, man-eater, trader and what not. Ram, played by Deepak Dobriyal, realizes his true calling as the night’s darkness envelops him on the Ram Leela event night. Donning the costume of Ravana, he unexpectedly uncovers the Ram within himself, preparing to embrace righteousness. Transitioning from a system-driven embodiment of evil, he awakens to a higher consciousness, evolving into a true officer. He stands out as Ram, one of his strongest performances, showcasing his incredible depth and talent.

The face-off of the duo at the police station is one of the best scenes you will see in the recent times that is so performance driven, layered with the complexities of psyche of a serial killer. He speaks with no remorse you feel the disconnection from societal norms and morals. You witness the animal unveil himself while you enjoy the performance. When he asks for a glass of water, you find yourself wishing you could ask for one too, as his performance is so powerful it leaves you feeling almost choked up. That’s the symphony of great creators coming together, writer, director and the actors make Sector 36 a great watch.

The film delves into the depths of greed, with the fictional version of KBC serving as a central highlight throughout the story. Reminiscent of the “9 baj gaye kya” KBC ad, the film underscores that no matter where you are, whether at home or even at a police station, you’ve got to be there to witness the game. That’s where the dark humor comes slides in. The film explores whose lives matter most, highlighting the divide between the rich and the poor and how cases are handled. Some cases are pursued to closure, while others may not even see the first step of filing an FIR. Self-interest plays a crucial role in this disparity The film’s narrative offers more than meets the eye if you’re able to navigate the intricate world of the Sector 36.  Thus Sector 36 explores themes of corruption, moral dilemmas, and the grey areas of justice.

The direction by Aditya Nimbalkar succeeds to craft a gritty, noir-inspired atmosphere with the grimy streets, tense interrogations, and a sense of unease lingering in every scene. The cinematography effectively captures the murky mood of the film, particularly through dim lighting and close-up shots that heighten the sense of paranoia.

Sector 36 is a decent crime thriller with strong performances and an intriguing premise, but it doesn’t fully capitalize on its potential. The film’s heart is in the right place, aiming to shed light on the dark corners of the justice system, but some narrative choices and pacing issues hold it back from being truly exceptional. It’s worth a watch for fans of the genre, especially for the solid performances. Vikrant Massey comes here as a real animal and will make everyone notice his performance as always.

Not for a weak heart. Sector 36 is now streaming on Netflix.
