Binny And Family – Charming in its Simplicity.
Director Sanjay Tripaathy fills the void created by Barjatya’s, giving us a feel good family entertainer normalizing F word and bridging the generation gaps like never before. A must watch for the whole family. While Binny is the heart of the film, the soul lies in Pankaj Kapur. His heart-warming performance is here to steal the show making Binny aur Family a must watch.
Anjini Dhawan essays the titular role of a 18year old daughter to Charu Shankar and Rajesh Kumar, struggling to find a space in her own house with the annual visit of Grand Parents, this forms the crux of a light-hearted Bollywood family drama that centres on the humorous and heart-warming dynamics of an Indian family based in London. Anjini Dhawan plays Binny with the right essence of showcasing vulnerability in her character to emerging stronger and succeeds to win hearts with her sheer performance and camaraderie she forms with Baba, played by Pankaj Kapur. There is a lot at stake for her, her SAT exams, her board, her play at school and her desire to be in a relationship apart from the uninvited space crunch.
She is constantly subjected to her family’s traditional expectations and meddling in her personal life. She is strong-willed, trying to carve out her own identity while her family keeps pushing her into situations and decisions that align more with their worldview than hers. The film’s humour comes from the clash between Binny’s aspirations and her family’s expectations.
While the film offers the usual dose of misunderstandings, emotional outbursts, and melodramatic situations typical of family dramas, it also provides several lighter moments that feel relatable hitting the right notes reminding us of our own family and grandparents. The family emotion is universal and Bunny aur family hits the right chord with this emotion.
Anjini Dhawan brings a certain freshness and charm to her role, making her character’s struggles both relatable and endearing. Her on-screen presence carries much of the film’s emotional weight along with her chemistry with Baba. Rajesh Kumar and Charu Shankar play her parents are in the skin of their character. Their bond and their growing concern for their daughter lands well. Himani Shivpuri comes as a great supporting role as grandparent. One of the best characters in the film is also Binny’s friend Naman Tripathi comes as a shadow to Binny in her thick and thin bringing the great support and right humour. A well balanced performance at display.
The film’s family banter and day-to-day chaos will resonates successfully. Much of the comedy is situational, and the interactions between various family members make for several entertaining moments. The cultural references and family drama elements are handled with humour, which keeps the narrative lively.
The story follows a somewhat predictable trajectory, with familiar tropes of traditional vs modern values and family meddling in love lives. This is a well-worn theme, so the narrative doesn’t feel particularly fresh, but the approach definitely is. At times, the film feels stretched, especially in the second half, where the plot could have been a little tighter.
Binny’s character represents a generation of young people in India trying to break away from traditional moulds while still respecting family values. The tension between individual desires and collective family decisions is another key element. In the end, the film underscores the importance of love and family and significance of bridging the gap with grandparents.
Sanjay Tripathy the director of the film does this well and weaves a story for us that is entertaining and relatable making Binny aur Family a pleasant family entertainer with a feel-good factor.
If you’re looking for a breezy, relatable film with a typical family drama setup and some heartfelt moments, Binny Aur Family fits the bill. It may not be ground-breaking, but it’s charming in its simplicity.
