Juna Furniture – Old is Indeed Gold!!!

Writer Director and Actor of the film Mahesh Manjrekar aces all the hats with his court room drama “Juna Furniture” and keeps you hook throughout the film with its intensity, performances and at times, its wit. It takes the legal journey for a son to learn a lesson taught by its parents. No teachings of parents go waste in this beautiful premise Mahesh Manjrekar brings us in “Juna Furniture”.

Mahesh Manjrekar plays the role of Father Govind Pathak alias Bachchan, and Medha Manjrekar essays the role of his wife in the film too. Their only son Abhay played by Bhushan Pradhan is married to Avni, essayed by Anushka Dandekar, staying at her Mansion in South Mumbai. Soon the director succeeds to showcase the disparity and disconnection amongst them and their son. Avni and Abhay are celebrating their Anniversary at Taj where Abhay’s parents are informed but not invited. On the same night, there is an event that draws the rest of plot.

The storyline revolves around a father and his son who find themselves on opposing sides of a legal battle. The courtroom serves as the stage where their personal conflicts and unresolved issues come to the forefront. As the trial progresses, we see a journey that not only delves into the legal intricacies of the case but also explores the deeper emotional and psychological aspects of their relationship. Pathak’s plea though vague seems genuine. The films writing is though provoking and forces one to ponder on their actions towards growing parents. The film delves into the emotional dynamics between a father and his son, often heightened by the intensity of a courtroom setting. Abhay, the son, realizes his mistakes, but it takes the court and his dad’s effort to bring this to realization. Else, in this fast-paced life people are busy chasing their dreams forgetting their ever-growing parents almost to the height of ignorance.

Mahesh Manjrekar as Govind Pathak does right or wrong, to bring this lesson is where the film leaves up to you to think. The case one resolved takes a U-turn too as the director continues to grab your attention and throws a ball again. Bringing you back to the court and this time to help you explore the dynamics of familial bonds, betrayal, loyalty, and the moral dilemmas. It raises questions about justice, personal integrity, and the sacrifices they are willing to make for their beliefs and at what cost.

The success of this film hinges on its writing and performances, which is at top-notch here. Mahesh Manjrekar rules the roost and how. Anushka Dandekar too gives an ace performance of a mean daughter in law. They do make you grin when she demands 2 dozen Avocados, showcasing disparity. Such minute details of writing works magic. Besides, there is Upendra Limaye who has a brilliant role to play, essaying the role of Pakya, plays an integral support to Govind Pathak. Sachin Khedekar is always dependable and as a Judge he brings the needed command to hold the case strong. Rest of the cast too add their bit to the plot giving us a compelling courtroom drama.

Mahesh Manjrekar’s writing brilliantly explores the courtroom family drama with the strong social message that old age senior citizens are not to be discarded and should be held with utmost care. The metaphor he gives for the followers on Instagram to the followers of Shivaji Maharaj, Baba Saheb Ambdekar, Dec 6 at Shivaji Park as real followers to be real than on social media is commendable. The writing is deep and so is the film’s moral too. Served with great performances, drama, and entertainment. Making it worth a watch.

The film has already been released in Cinemas in April 2024 and now is in competition on the Indian language’s films segment of the Indo-German Film Festival 2024. Film will get its OTT release soon for you to watch.
