Dunki – Just another DROP!!!

Rajkumar Hirani misses to strike the chord with the audience dooming SRK’s hattrick at the Box Office. It would still be a hit but highly doubtful to perform any better than Rajkumar Hirani’s earlier films or a milestone film in SRK’s filmography. It is just another film, just another drop. A drop at the BOX Office too compared to SRKs former films this year.

Dunki though has a better intention yet what it fails to offer is entertainment, besides it looks stale. The same pattern of creating comedy doesn’t really work and looks repetitive making Dunki a Dud. On top of that the film deals with a subject probably not so universal like Rajkumar Hirani’s earlier films. He took a dunki route to bring something new that could have been probably commendable if there would have been a change in approach too. His gags look the same some lifted from 3Idiots or some from MBBS. Watching his work closely you would know what’s coming making it predictive and letting you lose in your seat than sitting upright and watch it with interest.

The first half of the film is an absolute DRAG. A real patient test you are put through, if you cleared this you would come out smiling in the second half. Happy that it is over. Second half is bearable as this is where the story moves; though you know what’s coming yet it is the charisma of SRK that is at work. He is a stellar performer who can put a soul in the dead, that’s what his performance does to Dead Dunki coming alive. SRK works hard to make HARDY work and it does. Yet it is quite a mediocre film coming from the Director-Actor duo we all waited to come together.

Many have dreamt of being paired opposite SRK, Taapsee Pannu though becomes the chosen one, yet something is amiss in this pair and doesn’t really keep you on the same page as Hardy and Manu are. A love story that usually looks effortless when SRK is involved, with this one there seemed to be an effort for them to be comfortable in the skin of each other. She is decent playing her part, but chemistry doesn’t really hit the marquee. We have seen her doing stronger roles, roles with more meat than just a passing girl. They both together  will remind you of Preity Zinta and SRK from Veer Zaara. The impact here been minimal.

We know Dunki is not a love story, but love story plays an integral part in the film. However, it wouldn’t have mattered much if we had someone else playing Manu as primarily what fails Dunki to work is Rajkumar Hirani’s approach, stale subject, and its screenplay.  The film has a superstar SRK, stellar support Cast Vicky Kaushal, it has a decent music, a great director and yet it fails to give an immersive fulfilling experience which otherwise a Rajkumar Hirani film would do.

None of the Dunki drops drew us close to look forward to the film what Dunki would turn out to be. Yet we were hopeful for the Director Actor Combo Dunki brings in. Alas, Dunki with low expectations also, it drops.

PK Verdict: Just Silver 2.5*s

A special mention of Vicky Kaushal, as Sukhi he leaves a mark yet again with his guest appearance role. A Pandora talent that is honest in each performance. Moving souls with his sheer performance irrespective if the character has enough meat or not, he never fails to  put up a soul into it.
