Thama Trailer – Thaamba!!!

Thama is essentially Thaamba—perhaps Maddock’s own pause to reflect and deliver what they are truly seeking.

The Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU) is one of the most exciting horror-comedy experiments in Indian cinema. After the Ramsay Brothers, if anyone has managed to send chills while adding chuckles, it’s Maddock. But with Thama, the big question is—are the creators running out of fresh ideas?

The trailer starts strong. Nawazuddin Siddiqui commands attention instantly, pulling you in with his magnetic screen presence. Unfortunately, the impact fizzles out within the first minute, sinking into mediocrity. Rashmika Mandanna once again struggles with dialogue delivery, reminiscent of her issues in Animal. The “clenched-teeth” lines don’t sound natural, even if she’s playing a supernatural character. Paresh Rawal and Sathyaraj may bring some comic relief, but the “Anda Omelette” gag already feels flat.

Ayushmann Khurrana seems trapped in a repetitive cycle—same expressions, same tropes, same zone we’ve seen him in too many times before. His transformation into Betaal feels underwhelming, especially when compared to Varun Dhawan’s Bhediya. Even cult throwbacks like Nevala from Bandh Darwaza still feel fresher than this.

The only hope here rests on Niren Bhatt’s writing—if the script really has that spark, maybe the Betaal storyline will finally come alive. Otherwise, just as in the Vikram-Betaal tales where Betaal disappears when bored, audiences too will vanish if the film fails to hold.

To add spice, the makers have thrown in a Nora Fatehi item number, and while it might heat up the screens, whether it blends with the story or merely distracts is the real question. Rashmika as Tadaka may yet inject some tadka into this otherwise thanda Thama. But from what we see, Nawazuddin is once again the true saving grace—he never fails to light up the dullest corners, and here too he seems to be the light at the end of the tunnel.

As the trailer stands, Thama looks less like a pataka and more like a possible phuski. The trailer doesn’t inspire confidence that this Diwali we’re getting anything groundbreaking, though there’s still a sliver of hope. Will it make us laugh harder, scare us deeper, or leave us with neither? We’ll find out when Thama releases on October 21st. For now, this Diwali release risks being a damp squib instead of a cracker.
