Nishaanchi – The Aim Falls!

Anurag Kashyap, known for his offbeat, gritty, and unconventional cinema—whether dark comedies, love stories, or gangster thrillers—has always been a Nishaanchi, a sharp shooter who usually hits the mark. Unfortunately, with Nishaanchi, the aim falters.

What begins as a promising twin-drama, seemingly setting itself up for a triangle in its next part, ends abruptly with a jarring “End of Part 1.” After nearly three hours of runtime, the sudden break leaves us more drained than intrigued. It makes you wonder: would this story have worked far better as an OTT web series than as a theatrical release that overstays its welcome? For the most part, the experience feels stretched, leaving the audience sulking through long portions.

What prevents us from walking out, however, is the cast. Though raw, they deliver convincing performances. Vedika Pinto and Aishwary—playing a double role—shine with terrific screen presence. Vineet Singh brings depth to his supporting role, his chemistry with Monika Panwar (last seen with terrific performance in Khauf on Amazon) adding spark to the narrative. At first, Monika’s casting as a mother feels misaligned—she seems too young for the role—but she quickly grows into it. Composed, sharp, and layered, she turns in one of the film’s most brilliant performances. Kumud Mishra, as always, never disappoints—his presence anchors the drama and adds weight whenever he’s on screen.

The film’s biggest curse is its length. Songs crop up frequently—blended well into the narrative but too repetitive, making the film feel longer than it already is. They lean more toward quirky and funny than soulful, in classic Kashyap fashion. Kashyap seems stuck in his comfort zone with this one. Nishaanchi feels like a rehash of tropes he has used umpteen times, offering nothing truly new or jaw-dropping.

Ultimately, the film doesn’t justify its runtime. On OTT, one could easily fast-forward through the drag and still enjoy the solid performances. In theaters, though, the pacing tests your patience.

From “Yeh film dekho” it quickly slips into “Yeh film jhelo.”
