IC814 – Keeps you hooked!!!

IC814 is a Netflix series based on the true events surrounding the hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC814 in December 1999. The series delves into the harrowing week long ordeal, where the plane, en route from Kathmandu to New Delhi, was hijacked by terrorists and forced to land in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The situation became a significant diplomatic crisis for India, as the hijackers demanded the release of several militants in exchange for the hostages.

The word Hijack probably I heard for the first time way back in 1999 while I was still in college. Vaguely recalling the series of the events and scary glimpses that were still fresh of Kandahar jeeps with men holding Guns. The Netflix Series brings these glimpses back with the real footage integration making this docu drama work; reminding you of the horror gone by. Back then just for the moment, the questions officials ask Did We?, forcing one to introspect.

The series does a commendable job of portraying the tension and anxiety experienced by both the passengers on board and the Indian government officials trying to resolve the crisis. The storyline closely follows the sequence of events, from the initial hijacking to the intense negotiations and the final resolution. The show is well-paced, keeping the viewers engaged with a mix of suspense, emotion, and political drama. Based on Captain Devi Sharan’s book “Flight into fear” the series keeps you hooked with its events. Succeeding to showcase the dynamics of decision making and what will form the history.

The series features a mix of real and fictional characters, with some artistic liberties taken for dramatic effect. The portrayal of the passengers is particularly strong, showcasing a range of emotions from fear and despair to resilience. The characters representing the government officials and negotiators are also well-crafted, highlighting the moral and ethical dilemmas they faced during the crisis. The ensemble cast does a brilliant job, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Arvind swamy, Kumud Mishra, Dibyendu Bhattacharya Dia Mirza, Patralekha, Amrita Puri, Manoj Pahwa, Rajiv Thakur they all are spectacular to watch bringing in the right gravitas. It is Vijay Verma who indeed is the captain and with his composed act brings a lot of credibility needed for the passengers as well as us as audience to hold onto. It is good the see a different spectrum of the actor Rajiv Thakur who is always ready to tickle the funny bones; this time succeeds to send us shivers down the spine with his role as chief and delivers a layered performance at ease.

The rest of the cast too delivers solid performances across the board. The actors playing the hijackers bring a chilling intensity to their roles, while those portraying the hostages evoke empathy and fear. The performances of the negotiators, specially the task force of 4 on ground in Kandahar, actors Arvind Swamy, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Kumud Mishra and Manoj Pahwa as government officials add layers of complexity to the series, as they navigate the delicate balance between saving lives and upholding national security. Their banter is real and echoes the right inner voice yet bound by helplessness.

The direction is tight, with a clear focus on the situation. The cinematography effectively captures the claustrophobic environment of the plane and the stark, hostile landscape of Kandahar. The use of flashbacks and parallel narratives helps to build a deeper understanding of the characters’ motivations and the broader political context. The archives are so well integrated that this can go as a well-made docu drama.

The series touches on several important themes, terrorism, international diplomacy, and the human cost of political decisions. It also raises questions about the ethics of negotiating with terrorists and the long-term consequences of such actions.

IC814 is a gripping, well-crafted series that provides a deep dive into one of the most significant events in India’s recent history. It successfully balances the tension of a thriller with the emotional depth of a human drama, making it a must-watch for those interested in true crime, history, and international affairs.

Do not miss.
