Chand Mera Dil… or Chand Mera Dull?

The teaser and trailer of Chand Mera Dil had raised the bar exceptionally high. The intensity between the lead pair, the promise of a passionate conflict-driven love story, and the soulful music had all ingredients of an emotionally exhilarating romantic saga. We were all game to witness the complexities of love, heartbreak, and relationship dynamics between two individuals deeply invested in each other.

Unfortunately, the film takes a completely opposite route — leaving you emotionally dull rather than emotionally full.

What could have been an intense romantic drama gradually turns into an exhausting trauma.

The problem here is certainly not the performances. Both Ananya and Lakshya perform to the core, bringing sincerity, vulnerability, and emotional commitment to their characters. They do what they can with the material in hand. The chemistry works in moments, and when accompanied by the film’s beautiful soundtrack, one sees flashes of the film this could have been.

But cinema survives on writing, and Chand Mera Dil suffers heavily in this department.

An Udaipur boy meets a Delhi girl in Hyderabad — a setup filled with freshness and emotional possibility. Right from the teaser to the trailer, the focus seemed firmly rooted in the intensity of the lead pair and their relationship conflicts. And rightly so. That is exactly the film audiences signed up for.

However, somewhere along the way, the film derails itself.

Instead of exploring the emotional dynamics between the couple with depth, the narrative shifts focus into young parenting, ego clashes, negligence, and unresolved emotional baggage. The drama that was meant to emerge from romance slowly transforms into trauma. Not just between the couple alone — strangely, even the families are portrayed as disoriented plug-ins rather than emotionally integrated pillars of the narrative. Their presence feels surface-level, existing more for convenience than contribution.

Even the two campus friends and Bollywood’s stereotypical depiction of being “Hyderabadi” feel underdeveloped, adding little emotional or narrative value. These supporting characters come and go without truly integrating into the world of the film.

The biggest disappointment perhaps lies in the emotional disconnect.

The film attempts to tackle childhood trauma resurfacing in adulthood, but the execution weakens its emotional resonance. Post the first 40 minutes, everything begins to feel increasingly manufactured and dramatically forced. The emotional graph loses rhythm, and so does the audience’s investment.

And what a pity — because the music is simply illuminating.

The songs are soulful, memorable, and genuinely deserving of a better love story to thrive within. Had it not been for the music, the film may not even receive the traction it is likely to get in the coming days. It feels genuinely sad to see such beautiful songs losing their emotional rhythm because the story underneath simply fails to support them.

There are moments in the film where you catch glimpses of the romance you were promised — moments that briefly remind you of the passion and emotional conflict teased in the promos. But those moments are never nourished enough to blossom into the deeply moving love story we expected.

Dharma delivers yet another visually polished body of work with soul in its music, but unfortunately not enough soul in its writing. Strong performances and beautiful songs cannot entirely compensate for storytelling that loses direction midway. In the end, Chand Mera Dil leaves you with good music, committed performances, and the lingering feeling of what could have been.

Transforming Chand Mera Dil into, indeed, Chand Mera Dull. A big disappointment.
